Greek Traditional Products
A paradise of traditional Greek products in Nafplion.
Our goal is to regain the lost taste...20-06-2017 11:09
Taste is memory!
Touristorama visited Nafplion for one more time. And during this trip, as we wandered around the picturesque alleys of the old city, across the church of Saint George, we discovered a fine little store with authentic Greek products. A special grocery with gourmet treasures, mostly from Peloponnese but also from other Greek destinations. It is called Anapliotiko Mpakaliko (Anapliotiko in Greek means the one that comes from Nafplio, and Mpakaliko is the grocery store) and it is the creation of Giorgos Rozis and his wife Katerina Dimopoulou. Read why it is worth visiting!
Will you tell us how did you come up with the idea of opening a store like this?
Well, we used to live in Athens, the Greek capital, where the rythms of life were exhausting for us both. So we decided to return in Naplion, where Giorgos comes from, so as to create something of our own and live under better conditions, a more human and quiet life.
Besides, Giorgos' relatives run a diary a few kilometets away from Nafplio, with award winning products. This would be a welcome start for us indeed, since we would use these famous and tasty products in our store.
The truth is that I really love Nafplio, it is a beautiful and romantic city, perfect to live a quality life with your family.
So the idea for a traditional grocery was combined with the existence of the dairy?
The cheese dairy would provide us with known quality products. These cheeses have been awarded for their taste and quality, so it was sure for us that we would include them in the store's products. But beyond that we were envisioning something bigger. George, because he worked in a pharmaceutical company, used to travel a lot. When he came back home, he would always bring something to taste, a new delicacy. It is something like philosophy, we both believe that "taste is memory". If you want to get to know a place well, you have to taste its products, its cuisine.
Which is the fact that makes Anapliotiko stand out?
Our goal is to regain the lost taste, to be able to get away from the global taste and return to the roots through our diet. In recent years there has been a recovery of traditional food through small producers, choosing the best varieties and producing quality products in small quantities. So, what makes us stand out is that we ensure our customers find pure products of small producers. I would like, here, to emphasize that we support Greek producers, mainly from Peloponnese, but also from some other parts of our country. We look for the purest, closer to the handmade, without preservatives, without additives, without flavor and aroma enhancers. True Greek traditional flavors.
What are your future plans? What vision do you have?
To acquire an even larger store, always with original products, pure and Greek. And why not; To expand abroad.
That's why we've already built an online platform to help our customers wherever they are. Through our e-shop www.e-mpakaliko.gr one can order and obtain our products to enjoy them in every corner of Greece and the world.
Nafplio is a pole of attraction for Greek and foreign tourists. Does Anapliotiko have foreign clients and, if so, what is it that they buy the most?
I would say that Anapliotiko has foreign customers with repeatability, which honors us! People who come every year to Nafplion and prefer to shop in our shop. As for what they buy? They prefer authentic traditional products: olive oil, honey, various cheeses ... We take care to pack them in such a way, for example in vacuum, to ensure safe transport and maintenance.
I think that returning to us for their purchases is the biggest proof that, both our products and we as humans, are very close to what they are looking for.
Would you describe your store as "delicatessen"?
The term delicatessen is a bit sketchy. Anapliotiko Mpakaliko offers excellent products, so in this sense it is one of the very grocery stores, but it does not have the high prices of the dealers. Our prices are very affordable because we are targeting to those who desire to eat properly, with exquisite healthy Greek products, rather than the wide consumption on the shelves of large chains. This customer can perceive the difference in quality and taste. We provide him both at prices he can pay for.
Except for the e-shop and the online orders, do you offer the possibility of phone orders as well?
Of course. It only takes a minute, it only takes a phone cal and our products are shipped quickly and safely wherever you tell us. We have, in fact, been working with ACS courier, ensuring transport costs are too low.
Anapliotiko Mpakaliko is located in Nafplion, on 29 Plapouta str. (opposite the church of Agios Georgios).

Despite its high-profile reputation, and the mid-day arrival of “One-Day Saronic Cruises”, the island remains endearingly time-warped.
